How to Prevent Cavities

September 3, 2020 | Blog

Cavity prevention is a part of everyone’s daily routine – or at least it should be. Cavities form from not taking care of your teeth and failing to regularly brush or floss.

What is a cavity? Cavities are permanently damaged areas on your teeth that will develop into tiny openings or holes. They’re very common. One in four adults have them, while more than half of teenagers in the U.S. have had cavities, as well. Dentists recommend to brush and floss your teeth twice a day to help maintain a healthy mouth and keep your teeth in good condition. Here are a few other ways to prevent cavities.

Visit your dentist regularly

In order to maintain good dental hygiene habits, dentists recommend two teeth cleanings a year. Many dental insurance plans will cover this, but most people don’t take full advantage of their benefits. When getting a professional teeth cleaning, the dentist will be able to take an up-close look at your teeth and get x-rays, if needed, to spot a cavity.

Brush with fluoride toothpaste after eating or drinking

Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride will help prevent tooth decay and strengthen weak spots or exposed roots. It slows the breakdown of enamel and increases the rate of the remineralization process. Using this toothpaste after eating or drinking will help get out any left-behind food particles.

Drink tap water

Most public water fountains and home faucets contain fluoride. Drinking bottled water seems like a safer route, since many people are afraid of tap water for whatever reason. In the long run, fluoride in the tap water can benefit your teeth.

Eat tooth-healthy foods

Cheese – yes, you heard that right – is a tooth-healthy food. When eating cheese, your pH is raised in your mouth, which lowers your chance of tooth decay. It contains a lot of calcium and proteins, which help strengthen tooth enamel. Yogurt is another tooth-healthy food. The probiotics found in yogurt are said to benefit your gums. The good bacteria from the yogurt will replace the bad bacteria that can cause cavities. Of course, the best yogurt to have would be one with no added sugars.
