4 Foods and Drinks That Stain Your Teeth

June 15, 2018 | Blog

Every smile is unique, but most people prefer them to be healthy and white. If you have ever found yourself taking “the tissue test” by comparing the whiteness of your teeth to a tissue, there are some things you should know about some of your favorite food and drinks.

Coffee and Black Tea

Who else needs coffee or tea before starting their daily routines? Black tea can stain your teeth just as much, or even worse, than coffee. These beverages contain natural compounds called tannins that stick to your teeth because they are attracted to the protein in your enamel. But don’t worry! We’ve got a solution. Drinking green tea (or white tea) can lighten the chances of your teeth being stained.

Wine

It’s not uncommon to enjoy a nice glass of wine on the weekends. But white and red wine both contain teeth-staining tannins, as well. While both are pretty harsh on your teeth, white wine has more acid than red. Never giving up wine? Rinsing your mouth out with water after your glass (or two) can significantly reduce the potential of staining your teeth.

Soda and Energy Drinks

Chances are that at some point you’ve regularly consumed or at least tried soda, Gatorade or energy drinks. While the fruit flavors and carbonation give us a quick boost, these are all bad news for your teeth. They have high acid content and are also higher in sugar, which means cavities could be in the near future. The best alternative is to cut soda and energy drinks out completely and replace them with water. However, if you’re an athlete and in need of replacing electrolytes, consider drinking natural drinks like coconut water.

Berries

Last but not least, everyone loves their grandma’s blueberry pie. But like red wine and brown soda, berry pies contain little pigments that can stick to the protein in the teeth. Same goes for some of your favorite fruits like cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes and pomegranates. You should try to eat berries in moderation and check out enamel-boosting and whitening fruits, such as pineapple, pears, apples and cucumbers.

With these teeth hacks, you’ll be sure to crush the tissue test. And if you need help with your smile or color of your teeth, give Gulf Coast Dental a call today!
